One Day by Afifa Imran
When the air
of weary thoughts
and sadness
lift the scent
of strengthened souls
the scent
of companionship
and renewed hope
shall persist
Once the vase enclosing
the flowers of solicitude
breaks the fields
of coloured peace
swaying with the winds
will await
The presence
of excited breaths
The absence of
lonely winds
Till the echoes
of laughter
and rainbow studded
clouds remain
our soulslie awake
Wishing to reunite
once again
celebrating
old friends
new years
lost smiles
conquered fears
The world we once
were trapped in
will be filled with
crowds of people
rejoicing
each day
Standing beside
the sea
Standing beneath
the rain

Afifa Imran is a student of A Levels. Her poem ‘One Day’ is inspired by the months spent in lockdown, the melancholia of missing school days, her friends, and the time spent laughing to her heart’s content.
The idea behind the poem is to celebrate the world, to reveal and conceal. The words of hope in the poem are a revelation that better days are going to come, slowly but surely.
For now, amidst the anxiety of the pandemic, she believes the best way to cope is to conceal the pandemic of emotions within herself through rhythmic phrases and a few lines of poetry.
Afifa mostly likes to write, paint, observe the world, watch Marvel movies, witness pretty skies and try to understand herself and those around her as best as she can.
Oh, and she loves pandas.
