Dreamy Days by Hamayel Mashkoor

I open my teary eyes, gloomy and disconsolate,
the clock striking seven, but no school bus honking at my gate,

I take a trip down my memory lane,
and gratifying, jovial reminiscences overcrowd my brain,

Guffawing foolishly with my pals until I could breathe no more,
often reaching the classroom late, only to find myself behind the locked door,

Standing under the sweltering sun in the overlong canteen line,
having nonsensical debates about water being neutral, or slightly alkaline,

Those laughs and those chuckles all echo in my ear at the loudest I can hear,
never in my wildest dreams had I imagined these glorious days to disappear

I hide myself under the pillow, being lachrymose and pink-eyed,
pondering over why I didn’t count my blessings when they were still by my side

But I promise myself that once the current situation ends,
I will relive these majestic moments at my second home, along with my beloved friends.

An undying infatuation with one’s passion and an endlessly driven pursuit for happiness are two basic elements of the ideology of life, the amalgamation of which can make the simplest of creations into paragons of excellence.

Indeed, this is the philosophy by which Hamayel Mashkoor of X-G (Gratitude) lives her life, allowing the diversity of her passions, from football to singing, and the vehemence of her devotion to them, to fuel the creation of a satisfying life.

Hamayel revisits memories of a seemingly ancient time in her composition, “Dreamy Days”, in the wake of the despondent shadow thrown over the world by the COVID19. A misty-eyed recollection of bittersweet memories, “Dreamy Days” pays tribute to the unappreciated friends, the school premises and the unforgettable memories of irrevocable euphoria in a rejuvenated light and promises the perpetuation of this rekindled sense of gratitude when the world awakens from its pandemic-induced slumber.
